Yoichi was built upon the herring fishing industry and flourished in the early 19th century. In 1954, the last large spawn or “Kuki” when the sea water becomes white with herring eggs, the herring populations declined dramatically and now Yoichi has become famous for its shrimp, squid, sea urchin, abalone, and flounder.
